The College of Education and Human Development’s minor in Teaching Multilingual Learners prepares undergraduate students in education to understand and instruct multilingual students, specifically in teaching and learning contexts within K-12 settings in Kentucky. This minor is designed specifically for those seeking an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement to attach onto an initial Kentucky teaching license.
The minor is open to students pursuing majors in teacher education. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 to be admitted to the minor.

1EDTP 202 requires 3 hours of field experience. Recommended to take first.
2EDTP 318 must be taken prior to or concurrently with EDTP 335, EDTP 430, EDTP 375, and EDTP 321
3EDTP 321 is recommended to take last.
At least three (3) semester hours of the requirements for a minor must be successfully completed while enrolled in the University of Louisville.
Exit Requirement: Courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C- or higher. A minimum 2.25 grade point average is required in the minor.
The ESL Endorsement only exists as an attachment onto an initial Kentucky teaching license. Students who are pursuing initial licensure as a Kentucky classroom teacher AND seeking the ESL endorsement must:
- Successfully complete all course requirements including final ESL Portfolio containing artifacts representing ESL coursework;
- Pass the ESOL PRAXIS examination;
- Apply (with the assistance of the Educator Preparation Student Services office) for the ESL endorsement with the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
