Scholarships & Funding

Making your degree more affordable

The College of Education & Human Development (CEHD) offers qualified students financial aid options, including scholarships, grants, assistantships and tuition remission. Scholarships are open to all eligible students regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age.

Your guide to scholarships and funding

Graduate Assistantships
We offer assistantships, which involve hands-on work related to your degree while you're in school.
Tuition Reduction Initiative
We offer a reduced tuition rate for advanced educator preparation programs approximately 25% lower than the standard graduate rate.

Scholarships and Requirements Policy

  • Scholarships cover tuition only. If your tuition is already fully paid by other sources (e.g., grants, tuition remission or other scholarships), you won’t receive additional scholarship funds.
  • Award amounts vary based on donor agreements. Scholarships may combine funds from multiple donors, so the final award on your financial aid account may differ.
  • Financial aid adjustments: If your tuition is covered by other funds, your CEHD scholarship may be reduced or withdrawn to avoid overfunding.

Steps to Receive Your Scholarship

  1. Register for classes: You must register by the start of the term or your scholarship will be returned to the CEHD.
  2. Verification: The Honors and Scholarship Committee confirms your major, other financial aid, and enrollment.
  3. Award processing: The committee sends scholarship information to the UofL Financial Aid office.
  4. Posting: The UofL Financial Aid office applies the scholarship to your account.

While we aim to post awards before the bursar’s payment deadline, you are responsible for paying tuition if there’s a delay. You will be reimbursed once the scholarship posts.

Ayako and Fred were married at the American Embassy in Tokyo on November 27, 1953. Her father disapproved of her marring an American. Ayako was very courageous to not only marry an American, but to leave Japan to live in Kentucky where Fred finished his Pharmacy School education at University of Kentucky.

Frederick Bayard Phillips was born in Frankfort, Kentucky on July 28, 1928. Prior to entering service, Fred had three years of College and worked as a Pharmacist assistant at Oak Drug Co, in New Albany, Indiana but lived in Louisville. He returned to UK to finish his degree after he was discharged.

Ayako Phillips was a graduate of the University of Louisville, receiving both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. After graduation, she taught elementary education in the Jefferson County Public Schools at Rutherford Elementary. She had great compassion for newcomers to America and taught in a school with a large immigrant population. Ayako believed in the power of education to improve life.
