A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste
November 3, 2026
In the 1970s "A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste" became an iconic American advertising slogan and cultural catch phrase. Sue Chilton '68, '70 graduated from that generation, and once retired, knew she wanted to "give back."
"I have reached a point in my life where it's time to give back to the UofL, that supported me through scholarship support when I was pursuing my graduate degree in education. We believe in the adage, "From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required."
Through a series of thoughtful conversations with Mark Kaczmarczyk, Sr Director of Philanthropy, Sue and her husband Gil explored various options. What began as an initial conversation about remembering the CEHD through their wills, evolved in a final decision to offer immediate impact through a major current-use gift.
"We didn't need a named endowment; we simply wanted to make a major gift and put it to immediate use to support students through robust scholarship support." Sue's $55,000 gift supports student recruitment, increases aid to keep our student teachers in the classrooms during their internships, when we traditionally lose students due to having to quit their outside work to teach, and also supports emergency student support.
An alumni's vision to lift students up, meeting a plan and opportunity for success.
