What is a Digital Rights Manager (DRM)?

A DRM is a staff member designated by a school principal to request, receive, and track the usage of copyrighted accessible digital materials for students with qualifying disabilities that have been verified by a competent authority.  Ideally, this individual would be school-based.  However, if the principal deems a district-level individual to be the most appropriate to fulfill this role, a district-based individual may be appointed as a school’s DRM. 

 

Who should be a Digital Rights Manager (DRM)?

Personnel to consider for the role of DRM (in no particular order):

  1. School/District Technology Coordinator – Possesses knowledge regarding digital content the technology needed to access it
  2. Library media specialist – Possesses knowledge regarding copyright law and experience in keeping usage records
  3. Special education teacher – Possesses knowledge of the qualifying student’s academic strengths and challenges, learning style, ability use technology tools, and overall needs
  4. Regular education teacher – Possesses in-depth knowledge of the curriculum
  5. Principal or Vice Principal – Responsible for ensuring that all students achieve their potential

 

What are the roles and responsibilities of a Digital Rights Manager (DRM)?

A Digital Rights Manager (DRM) is responsible for monitoring and documenting copyright compliance within a school.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

Identifying and requesting digital textbooks from the KAMD for use by students with disabilities

Receiving and logging KAMD shipments of requested digital content

Maintaining documentation regarding student eligibility

Disseminating copyrighted digital content CDs to the teachers of authorized student users

Maintaining a Digital Textbook Usage Tracking Form

Providing direction and support to ensure teacher and student copyright compliance

Acting as liaison between school and KAMD staff
