Testing Information

Some programs may require a standardized test for admission, program completion and/or certification. UofL's Testing Services also offers additional information on individual tests.

Undergraduate Testing Requirements

For general undergraduate admission, first-time freshmen may be required to submit either an ACT or SAT score to meet the general university admission requirement.

Transfer students with over 24 credit semester hours may not need to submit a standardized testing score for admission.

Our undergraduate initial teacher certification programs will require the submission of passing ACT or Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (CASE) scores.

Admission to the certification portion of an initial teacher certification program is competitive.

Graduate Testing Requirements

Many graduate degree programs offered through the College of Education and Human Development require the submission of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

Admission to graduate degree programs is usually competitive and suggested minimum scores will vary depending on the program.

The University of Louisville now offers the computer-based Graduate Record Exam (GRE) on site. Examinees must register through Prometric testing at 1-800-967-1100 or at www.prometric.com

If you choose to take your GRE at UofL, you will take the exam at Testing Services in Davidson Hall, Room 310 on the Belknap campus. You can visit the UofL Testing website or call 502-852-6606 for further testing information. There is also a corporate site at Prometric Testing which is located in the Norwood Office Park Building across from Budget Car Sales at 7400 LaGrange Road (about 100 yards from the Intersection of LaGrange Road and Shelbyville Road). You can register for your preferred site.

Certification Testing Requirements

Teacher certification programs may also require a passing score on the Praxis exam for admission to a program or to obtain a recommendation for certification in the state of Kentucky. Tests and scores will vary depending on the type of certification being pursued.

International Applicants

Applicants whose native language is not English may be required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score to demonstrate sufficient language skills to successfully complete a graduate program at UofL.

Please review the international admission requirements as listed by the Graduate School.

Praxis

Passing scores for either the ACT or the Praxis CASE exams are required for admission to undergraduate teacher education programs. Test scores should be submitted to both the University of Louisville and the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board. Test scores are valid for ten years.

A passing score for the appropriate level exam is required to complete Kentucky certification requirements.
